At about 4pm at Ayeduase, a suburb of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) where most of its private hostels and other residential facilities are situated, a speeding vehicle went off its lane and ran into four students, killing one of them instantly in the process.
Eye witnesses revealed to Kumasi-based Nhyira FM that the car lost control and skidded off the road, running to the place the students were standing. Oblivious of what was happening, the vehicle ran over the four students in an instant, killing one female student who is believed to be a fresher (first year student). The vehicle also killed two sheeps that stood in its lane.
"I was standing right here, when all of a sudden we saw the car run into that place where some four students and other students were standing. However, before we could draw their attention with shouts, the uncontrolled vehicle had already ran over them, severely hitting one of them and killing her instantly while the others sustained various degrees of injury," one eyewitness narrated.
"The driver said that his uncle, who is a little advanced in years and who has no experience of driving, offered to drive the vehicle. He went ahead to spark the vehicle as a trial leading to the occurrence of the sad incident. So in actual fact, nobody was driving the car. The car drove itself and skidded off the road and entered the place the students were standing," one other eyewitness narrated.
Meanwhile, some shop attendants at the vicinity of Pinaman Hostel where the sad incident occurred said that they were almost affected by the vehicle but they have been miraculously redeemed, after the car was stopped by a blocks mounted beside the road.
The injured students have been transferred to Tek Hospital for treatment, while no information had been relayed about the one who lost her life yet.
Also the UTAG strike continues and the state of teaching and learning activities have not changed in KNUST. Students are agitating for a comeback from the strike for academic activities to commence.
May the soul of this first year female student rest in peace.
