Video: Bawku Technical Institute students stage massive demo over strict exams invigilation

Following student unrest, REGSEC closed Bolgatanga Technical Institute and Bawku Technical Institute.

Students lost control and started throwing stones at teachers, security personnel, and school property.

On August 1, 2022, the NIB questioned four Bolgatanga Technical Institute students, an instructor, and a National Service member on possible exam fraud.

In response to this, some students rioted and were charged with strict invigilation.

The Certificate II Core and Elective Subjects require final-year students to travel from their homes to the testing locations each exam day. Irate students damaged five autos, numerous motorcycles, and school property.

In order to ensure peace and security in the area's schools, Upper East Regional Minister and REGSEC Chairman Stephen Yakubu made the decision public in Bolgatanga.

It is a coordinated strategy because what is happening here and at Bawku Technical Institute is the same.

We have therefore decided to close the schools. He said final-year students may only go if they have a paper to complete, and everyone must depart by 1600 hours.

He promised security for schools and issued a warning that offenders would face consequences.

We won't tolerate security violations on campus or in this location, "he declared.

Zachary Yorose, the principal of Bolgatanga Technical Institute, said the NIB accepted two students in their final year and two in their second year.

He claimed the National Service person, himself, and the students had created a WhatsApp group under the Electrical Department Head.

The National Service member allegedly distributed math problems via WhatsApp, to which third-year pupils and second-year students outside the testing location replied.

According to him, the suspects were discharged with instructions to report later after being transported to the NIB's Bolgatanga Regional Headquarters.

The administrator moved the suspects to the NIB quarters when students started hurling stones, rioting and wrecking property.

He asserted that the pupils criticized the suspects' interrogation and the rigorous testing that stopped cheating.
