Teachers as we all know, are knowledge imparters at all levels in the educational field and as such deserve good working conditions and a sound mind in order to deliver effectively and appropriately.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers appealed to the government today in one of their meetings to provide better working conditions and necessary materials needed for them as most of them find themselves in a terrible state.
Even though the government is doing everything possible to help teachers deliver, GNAT is calling on the government to also shift focus on those teaching at the basic level since they have been neglected for a very long time.
Mrs Abigail Darko, the district GNAT chairman at Gomoa in the Central Region in her statement said it was time the government looked upon them to provide them with the necessary conditions to enable them to work well.
She also said in her address that the government of Ghana was only focusing on teachers in the Senior High Education level which is causing those at the basic level to suffer. They complained of bad housing, insufficient allowances, poor salary structure, lack of materials to enhance teaching and learning.
There has been several advancements in teaching and learning now and that the government should not focus only on the senior levels but also provide help for tutors at basic levels too. There has been an introduction of a new syllabus for teaching but textbooks to enable teachers teach are not available and it's very worrisome and disturbing for basic school teachers as they don't know how to teach their students in accordance to the new syllabus without textbooks.
Should a student do well at the basic level final exams to gain admission into the Senior High education, it depends mostly on how well teaching was done at the basic level.
To be a lawyer, banker, soldier, police, journalist, nurse, doctor, lecturer and any other professional or business person, you will need the services of a teacher. It's not just about any teacher, a good teacher to help you climb to that height.
Better working conditions for teachers especially those at the basic level means better and quality education to be delivered..
Teachers also deserve the best...
