Teacher Runs Into Trouble Over Alleged Thivery Of Welfare Money

A teacher has run into trouble with the law for allegedly forging signatures to withdraw money from the account of his school’s welfare association.

Ebenezer Hammond is alleged to have forged the signatures of two signatories to the account – that of the headmistress of the Oriens Complex School, and the treasurer welfare association, to withdraw cash totaling Ghs9,500.

These cash withdrawals of Ghs5,500, Ghs2,500 and Ghs1,500 were made at different occasions.

Ebenezer Hammond has been charged with forgery and stealing.

When he appeared before the Adentan circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, he told the court that he is not guilty of any wrongdoing.

He was granted bail in the sum of Ghs60,000 with three sureties.

He was ordered to make his next appearance on Thursday, February 24, 2022, for the case management conference.

The account of the welfare association of the school is with the Adentan branch of the Universal Merchant Bank.

There are three signatories to the account and they are the Headmistress, the treasurer of the association and the accused person.

Police Chief Inspector Jacob told the court that the accused person was authorized by the association to withdraw money from the account anytime it needed money and after all the three signatories have endorsed the cheque.

The prosecution said Hammond decided to exploit the arrangement to his advantage and began forging the signatures of the two other persons to take money from the association’s account.

He went for a new cheque book in the name of the association, took three cheque leaflets, forged the signatures of the Headmistress and the treasurer and succeeded in withdrawing the said amounts of money at different times and then went into hiding.

The crime was detected when the Headmistress requested for the statement of account from the bank.
