Free SHS Is Mashing A Lot Money. Limit It To Day Students Only Boarders Should Pay part - Opinion

Ghana in recently is going through a lot of financial difficulty and most people in Ghana are blaming it on the Free Senior High School that was implemented by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo after the 2016 election.

Free Senior High School was one of the top campaign promises that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gave to the good people of Ghana which gained them the mandate to govern the country. In fulfillment of their promise, the government, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo implemented the program which assisted many young people of Ghana to acquire Senior High School knowledge freely.

Although the program has a lot of positive benefits, it also has some negative effects and one of those negative effects is the huge amount of money that is getting into the program.

Since the start of the free Senior High School, it is estimated the government is spending about Gh¢2,312.00 on each student every year. According to the Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta, the government has used over Gh¢3.2 billion to fund the programme so far.

This is a huge amount of money. The school fees could not be huge as it is but other incentives like a free boarding house, free lynch for day students, free examination fees and others that are added to it has escalated the amount.

If the government can review the Free SHS program and limit it to Day Schools only. The program will remain in progress till the country get what it aimed at before the implementation of the program.

This will make those who want their wards to go to boarding houses be prepared to pay the difference from their own pockets. This will save the country billions of cedis which can be invested in education to make it better.

Many schools which are under this policy are undergoing a lot of crisis ranging from inadequate classrooms to inadequate dormitories which are making teaching and learning so difficult for both teachers and students.

The government seriously looks at this and makes it good for us all.
