Meet Professor Raymond Atuguba; One Of The 18 Eminent Persons Against The Anti Gay Bill.

A lawyer and academic, Raymond Akongburo Atuguba is an Associate Professor and Dean of the School of Law, University of Ghana where he has taught since 2002.

A graduate of University of Ghana, with a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB), he was called to the bar after passing his professional examination. He has a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Human Rights and International Finance and a Doctor of Juridical Sciences all at Havard Law School. He recently earned an Executive Master's Degree in Business Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management And Public Administration (GIMPA).

Having worked in the private and non for profit sector, he has also served in the public sector including as Executive Secretary to Ghana's Former President J.D Mahama from 2013 to 2015. Prior to his appointment as Executive Secretary, Professor Atuguba was for over 15 years engaged in the fields of constitutional governance and the consolidation of democratic gains, law and policy advocacy, public policy reform, natural resource governance, justice sector reform and rights based approaches to development.

He has been a Visiting Professor of Law and the Henry J. Steiner Visiting Professor of Human Rights at the Harvard Law School, a James Souverine Gallo Memorial Fellow at Harvard University, a Jennifer Oppenheimer Fellow at Harvard University, a Graduate Fellow at Harvard Law School, a Sheila Biddle Ford Foundation Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University and a Visiting Scholar at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. Cumulatively, he has taught over 40 related courses at several universities in Africa, Europe, the United States of America, and Australia.

Professor Atuguba has over 100 publications and has been engaged in over 100 research and advocacy projects. He has produced over 100 research and technical reports and has delivered over 300 papers and presentations on all continents of the world. His research interests are in Constitutional and Administrative Law in the Global South, Law and Development in Africa and Human Rights and Community Lawyering.

As the co-founder and former Executive Director of the non-profit Legal Resources Centre and later Founder and Team Leader of a Policy Consultancy Firm – Law and Development Associates, he has consulted for various governments and international organizations. These include the Governments of Ghana and Liberia; the UN-OHCHR, UNDP, UNODC, EU, ECOWAS, DFID, USAID, GTZ (GIS), DANIDA, ILO, World Bank, British Council, Action Aid International, Plan International, Oxfam and other organisations.

He is a member of the Ghana Bar Association and has argued several precedent cases in Ghana's Supreme Court. He is also a member of the African Studies Association, the Ghana Society for Development Dialogue and a Senior Fellow of the International Institute for Advanced Studies.

Professor Atuguba is one of the 18 eminent professionals against the Anti Gay Bill which is a private members bill named "Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Values".
