The Minority Spokesperson on Education in Parliament, Hon. Peter Nortsu Kotoe, MP for Akatsi North Constituency, has added his voice in condemning the publishers of some textbooks which the people of the Volta region deemed very offensive and an attempt to paint a gloomy picture of their tribe.
In a statement issued on his page on Facebook, the Member of Parliament stated that the publications does not only contain very distasteful sentences and paragraphs but begs to say that the more you flip the pages the more one becomes enraged as an Ewe.
He also added that the publications are not in resonation with our quest for national cohesion as a country and that education is supposed to inform and disabuse people's mind against ethnic stereotyping, bigotry and other unhealthy impressions.
Below is the full statement issued by the Member of of Parliament;
"I have followed keenly the debate and rightly so, the outrage of my people, the Ewe Community across the country regarding these ethnocentric publications titled: History of Ghana, authored by Badu Nkansah and Nelly Martinson Anim and Golden English 4, authored by Alexander Baafi for the purposes of teaching and learning in our schools.
Not only do the books contain very distasteful sentences/paragraphs but it begs to say that the more you flip the pages the more enraged you become as an Ewe at the attempt to re-write our history and paint a gloomy picture about us to the next generation.
I have heard voices that matter speak publicly against these publications and wish to commend them before I add my voice.
I wish to put on record that these publications are not in resonation with our quest for national cohesion as a country. Education is supposed to inform and disabuse people's mind against ethnic stereotyping, bigotry and other unhealthy impressions.
Unfortunately, these books are rather out there to do the reverse, thereby sowing a seed of discord amongst us. To correct the wrongs, it is only appropriate that the books be recalled and taken out of the market completely.
I will equally lead the Volta MP's Caucus to make an official statement on the issue on the floor of Parliament to demand that the relevant bodies in charge of our educational sector do the needful to correct this offensive, divisive and despicable act."
