“The GLC is moribund and must go. I will pay ₵10,000 towards its dissolution” -Prof Kwaku Azar

Today, March 16, the renowned Ghanaian law professor, Kwaku Azar, has vented his anger towards the Ghana Legal Council (GLC) on his Facebook page after Supreme Court (SC) dismissed his review application and further charged him GH10,000.

According Professor Kweku Azar, the Chief Justice (CJ) wants the Attorney General (AG) to employ experience law attorneys at the SC.

However, AJ believes that such legal move will affect his office since he has only “26 Chief State Attorneys” serving the whole nation.

Therefore, Kwaku Azar doesn’t understand why legal education has been restricted to only Ghana School of Law to train only 500 students as it is been captured in the 2021 budget.

He wrote that

“Meanwhile the national budget has set a goal of admitting only 500 students to the monopoly provider of legal education in 2021 and the Supreme Court claims it has no jurisdiction to determine whether such a monopoly is constitutional.

The fault, Ghanafuo, is not in our stars but in ourselves, that we are going forward in reverse.

The GLC is moribund and must go. I will pay ₵10,000 towards its dissolution”

The chronicle of this legal altercation between Attorney General (1st respondent), Ghana Legal Council (2nd respondent) and Professor Kweku Azar (applicant or plaintiff) is that the plaintiff believes that the 2nd respondent is violating Article 25, clause 2 by prohibiting private institutions to set up and run legal education institutions in Ghana.

Article 25(2) states that

“Every person shall have the right, at his own expense, to establish and maintain a private school or schools at all levels and of such categories and in accordance with such conditions as my be provided by law.”

On July 28, 2020 the Supreme Court dismissed the plaintiff application which was initially filed on October 8, 2019 and amended on February 13, 2020.

Nonetheless, the plaintiff sought for review of the case in which SC refused to grant him hearing and further charged him GH10,000 for legal cost.

Below is the reference link which entails the review application of the plaintiff.
