Meet Vice Chancellor Of University of Health And Allied Sciences (UHAS) Professor John Owusu Gyapong

Professor John Owusu Gyapong is an Academic, University Administrator, Public Health Physician and Epidemiologist.

A product of Presbyterian Boys SHS where he obtained his O Level Certificate, he went to St Thomas Aquinas SHS for his A Level Certificate. After his secondary education, he gained admission to the medical school of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for his medical education. He later obtained his Master of Science in Public Health in Developing Countries and a PhD in Epidemiology all at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London.

Prof. Gyapong practiced as a physician in Kumasi and then in other towns such as Dormaa, Navrongo, Bawku.

Having taught at the University of Ghana, School of Public Health, the Professor of Epidemiology and Disease Control rose through the ranks from Vice Dean of UG's School of Public Health to Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana in charge of Research, Innovation and Development.

He is also an adjunct professor of International Health at the Georgetown University in Washington, USA.

In August 2016, he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho and on October 4 that same year, a colourful ceremony was held where he was sworn in.

He has over 120 publications in peer reviewed journals, 50 Technical reports and more than 300 conference presentations.

His main area of research is infectious disease epidemiology especially lymphatic filariasis and other neglected tropical disease and malaria. He's been involved in several large scale field epidemiological trials in Ghana including the Ghana on Vitamin A Supplementation, Malaria Intervention Studies and Social and Economic impact of lymphatic filariasis.

He established and managed the Ghana Neglected Diseases Control Program for 8 years. He has also served as member and chair of WHO, NTD committees. He is currently a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of WHO-TDR. He has also served on International and Research Review Committees and boards including European Developing Country Clinical Trial Partnership and Ghana's FDA.

For 12 years, he was Director of Research and Development at the Ghana Health Service and he has also received at least 5 million dollars of research grants.

Professor Gyapong is a fellow of;

*Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences

*Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons

*Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

*American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and a member of the Ghana Medical Association.
