All Teachers Embark On Indefinite Nationwide Strike; Check Why And How Government Intervenes

All teacher unions at the pre-tertiary levels have declared an indefinite nationwide strike effective Monday. This was communicated to the public at a joint press conference held in Accra on Monday. The unions comprised Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) and Tertiary and Education Workers Union (TEWU).

The teachers have since the beginning of the year requested a payment of between 20% and 30% of their salary as cost of living allowance (COLA). However government seems to be unconcerned about their demands hence the declaration of a nationwide strike with immediate effect.

Addressing the press today, president of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu said until their demands are met, no teacher will go back to the classroom. He said they are not ready to engage government for any negotiation either.

Prior to the declaration of the strike, Mr. Carbonu had called on the public to bear with the teachers as they take a bold step for their survival. In a write up posted on Facebook, Mr. Carbonu congratulated all regional executives for engaging the public by organising regional level press conferences. He directed the regional executives to contact school authorities, parents and students before the strike is finally declared. Check Mr. Carbonu's post a few days ago below.

"I will like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of you for the successful press conferences held in all the Ten NAGRAT Regions of Ghana. As you were informed at the NEC meeting, the Unions in Education will be holding a joint press conference on the 5th of July to declare a Nationwide strike. Some work will have to begin prior to the declaration, i.e,

1. You must have one to one contact with School reps to prepare them on how to close down their schools upon declaration.

2. Prepare a routine visit with your Regional Officers to a number of Schools upon declaration.

3. All Regional officers should meet on Monday to prepare the strategy for movement. There is no excuse for any Regional Officer.

4. Inform all heads of institutions and Schools that they will become enemies of the unions if in any event they attempt to obstruct the strike in any form or shape.

5. Between today and the 5th, Regional Chairmen and Officers should get into the various platforms in the Region and sensitise them about the strike please no one should renege on this."

Soon after declaring the strike, the government through fare wages and salaries commission has intervened. In a letter to the agitating teacher unions, the government has directed the teachers to suspend the strike in order for negotiation to resume. The letter stated that the teachers took the decision to lay down their tools at a time government had initiated processes to engage them over their concerns. It insisted until the teachers return to class, nothing can be done about their grievances.
