Speaking to BBC recently, talented veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie said it was unafrican for a man to go down on his knees to propose to a woman. Explaining further the revered actor said it also amounted to transferring some sort of authority that the man ought to have to the woman.
He said "We are trying to copy white people, right? I believe in the sacrosanctity of our culture, the essence and the core of our culture," he said.
"The white man kneels to propose to a girl, you know what it means? The girl takes over the family. This is why whenever you disagree with your wife overseas, you are kicked out and the wife takes the house. As a young man, you should be in charge of your destiny. Kneeling for a woman makes you a fool".
But why do men go on their knees in other to propose to a woman? It’s believed that the culture of kneeling came from the idea of knights getting down on their knees in front of their Lord as a display of respect, obedience, and loyalty
Knights would get down on one knee in front of their lord as a display of respect, obedience, and loyalty. ... "So when a courteous gentleman was proposing to his lady, pledging his allegiance to her and declaring his undying love for her, getting down on one knee was the natural thing to do
The correct way that this is normally done is that when you decide to propose, your left knee should be on the ground, while the right should be up. Meanwhile, the ring box should be in your left hand and must be opened with your right hand.
It’s quite interesting that the kneeling starts with the man during the proposal stage but during the marriage, it’s the woman who does most of the kneeling most of the times on both legs
