A growing up chronicle of a young boy (Ellar Coltrane) being raised by a divorced couple (Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke) and his relationship with his parents. Prior to this, Texas director Richard Linklater had already filmed a novel by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy for nine years (the Before Sunset, Before Dawn and Before Midnight trilogy), and then he aimed to cover 12 years in the life of a young man: from first grade to coming of age. The experiment was a success: in "Boyhood" one feels real life, because time is capable of something that no make-up artist is capable of. For almost three hours, we observe the transformation of a boy into a man from some intimate and trusting distance, so that by the end of the film all the characters become like relatives. The picture won several prizes at the Berlin Film Festival, the Golden Globe and the BAFTA Award (for Best Film), and the incredible Patricia Arquette received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, because her selfless heroine always has children in the foreground.
