Tamale - Based TV Channels Among 49 Stations Nationwide To be Closed For Operating Illegally

Two of Northern Ghana’s biggest Television channels are among 49 television channels to be shut down by the National Communication Authority as they are deemed to be operating illegally. News That Sagani and North Television, two very prominent Tamale-based TV stations will be closed has sent shock-waves among Viewers who say the decision will affect their TV experiences as they will no longer have channels that feed them with local content. Businesses have also expressed worry that the decision if followed through will deny them platforms to reach out to prospective clients.

In a statement, the NCA said the decision follows a monitoring exercise of some TV platforms which revealed that the affected channels were operating illegally, an action that contravenes the Electronic Communication Act 775 of 2008.

“As part of our continuous monitoring exercise conducted on various satellite Free-to-Air Television platforms using the Broadcast Monitoring System (BMS) and the Radio Spectrum Monitoring System (RSMS). The monitoring reveals that some channels were operating without valid authorisations,” the statement said.

North Television and Sagani TV have audience scattered across Northern Ghana and beyond and their closure will have far reaching consequences. It is unclear when the closure will be effected but Islamic clerics relying on the stations to preach the gospel to Muslims this Ramadan may have to explore other options to be able to reach out to the ummah.
