Dan Sur is a 23-year old Mexican who is an underground artist who has about 1.9 million followers on TikTok. He has been gaining attention for a look he has been wearing since April, which involved having gold chains implanted directly into his skull.
A video shared somewhere in April, went viral this week when he said “I have it as a hook that is implanted in my head and that hook has hooks and they are all hooked in my skull, under my skin. This is my hair. Golden hair. The first rapper to have gold hair implanted in human history.”
Sur has repeatedly taken to TikTok to prove to doubters that his chains are the real deal. In one video — speaking in Spanish, as he does in every post, he shows how they don't float in a glass of water. However, this is not actually the most credible method to prove its authenticity. He did this to prove to his followers, and some of them believed it was real.
According to plastic surgeon Dr Frank Agullo, this is a very uncommon procedure that carries immense risks. He said “Implants like this are not safe. “They introduce an easy path for bacteria between the outside world and the internal body. In this case, the bone covering the brain. In addition, I am concerned about the amount of weight these hooks are supporting. The weight or any accidental tug on a band of gold could cause the implant to dislodge and even fracture the skull.”
He continued to explain that even if Sur removes the chains, he still has hooks sticking out of his head. “Hygiene, even sleeping, can become challenging".
In a TikTok video, he shared with his followers how he sleeps with that on his head. He said, "I remove the chains to sleep".
Dermatologist Dr Mona Gohara also added her voice in an interview with Yahoo Life. She said “I would imagine that one could take out [the hooks], but not without risk of permanent scarring or scalp inflammation. One may even experience permanent hair loss from damage to the follicle.”
“I would strongly discourage anyone [from undergoing this procedure], for all the risks and complications involved. Especially at a young age, long-term consequences need to be considered. I think there are other, more sensible, and easily reversible alternatives like wearing a wig with gold chains. I don't believe that it needs to be anchored to your skull.”
Be cautious! Weave in some gold strands onto your hair. You are much better off doing that.” he adds.
Sur did this just because he wanted to be unique from others, and brand himself in that image. He explained saying “The truth is that I wanted to do something different because I see that everyone dyes their hair. I hope not everyone copies me now” he said.
The 23-year old rapper says he's a trendsetter. However, he hopes that not everyone will copy his brand. Truly, it would be very difficult for others to copy his brand. A deep dive into his Instagram page reveals other traditional looks he used some years ago before doing this.
