If Stonebwoy Is Getting Ghc 2000 As Royalties From GHAMRO, How Much Would Patapaa Receive? (OPINION)

Composing music that conveys good meaning to listeners is not an easy process, despite what many people and current musicians believe. Music used to be used to educate society, but that is no longer the case. Music they say is food to the soul and therefore, the kind of music we listen is very important in our daily lives.

Over the years, the music industry has received a lot of criticism from musicians who claim that the amount of money granted to them as royalties is a pittance. It is a truth in this country that many senior artists died of poverty as a result of the music they composed while they were younger. In some advanced countries, royalties alone are sufficient to support an entire generation, so why are musicians in Ghana paid so little for all of the radio and television stations that play their music?

The former Sekondi Member of Parliament, Paapa Owusu Ankomah, who was dubbed Mugabe because of his long tenure in parliament, is unable to reconcile his conscience after hearing the amount of money paid to Stonebwoy as royalties. Stonebwoy aka 1Gad, an international artiste of Stonebwoy's caliber, does not appear to pay royalties in this amount.

If royalties were the sole form of money for Ghanaian musicians, I believe many would have chosen farming over a pinch of salt in royalties. Patapaa would have retired from music a long time ago. Something urgently needs to be done to improve the lives of musicians in this country in order to prevent the majority of them from dying of poverty in their old ages. It is time each and everyone of the musicians do something extra to make more income because, looking at what the big guys are getting, nothing better could be done with royalties.
