The success of the Nigerian music is thanks to a combination of good talented Artists, producers, DJ’s, local and international promoters, marketing, etc. Other answers have covered most of the points, but I wish to emphasize on a few more.
Nigerians love their music. Fela Kuti paved the way with this Afrobeats. Today’s artists modernized this genre by combining the flavors from African music to the American RnB and pop music. The rise of P-square followed by a series of many Naija Artists; Timaya, D’banj,—-and most recently, Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy.
Keep in mind, Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and they have the largest Diaspora of representatives in every country. This competitive advantage helps to market the music in other countries. Afrobeats is purely African.
They produce good quality Afrobeats music. This genre is African, Unique, and Very easy to dance to, regardless of your taste.
Nigeria has 190–200 million people. They have a large Diaspora population. This helps to spread their music all over the world.
Most of their music is in English, which helps with the popularity. If you can get into the US market, thse rest of the world follows. This is something that Congolese or Tanzanian music would have a hard time achieving.
As if that wasn’t already enough, some of the artists are quite handsome and beautiful. In the entertainment industry, the physical attributes help. I mean look at D’banj or Tiwa Savage for example. How would you not fall in love?
The Nigerian Music Industry became popular when Nigerians decided to appreciate their own.
I remember those days our radio stations were filled with foreign music. We didn't have much to relate with. We had Fela and some other musicians, but something was just missing.
Nigerian artist identified the gap which they filled, and the result was a Big Bang effect.Though the recognition began with Fela Kuti, but the secret of the success now is the lyrical nature of the songs produced by Nigerian artist and the production that goes into the beat and how the artist rides into the beats.
The effect of the beats is usually spontaneous that you just get up and start to shake your body. It's so unique that it has giving Nigeria an identity. It's a product exported from Nigeria.
Even if you do not agree with the content and messaging strategy of the lyrics, the fact remains that the music coming out of Nigeria is very popular ,enjoyable and very danceable .
Talent and nice beats have helped the Nigerian Music Industry become popular across Africa.
