Radio Gold Given 60 Days To Pay Hefty Amount Before Starting Operations

It was all joy some few weeks ago when it was revealed that the licenses of some media stations have been given back to them. It can be recalled that few years ago there was a crackdown on radio stations operating illegally. Surprisingly, Radio Gold, a partisan FM station was affected by this crackdown. In what the Opposition NDC have said is a political attack on their speech, Radio Gold and Radio XYZ were shut down in 2019.

After a series of deliberations, the licenses are ready to be given to the so they start operations. Many have been wondering if radio channels for example can get back the same frequency they were operating. On Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere interviewed Rev. Edmund Fianko who is the Head of Engineering at the National Communications Authority. According to him they have had a meeting with the affected stations who want to return and have given them 60 days to pay monies for their license.

According to Rev. Fianko, Radio Gold have to cough out GHS 53,000 within this duration. After the monies are paid, the NCA team will then visit their facility and check if they have met the necessary conditions for them to start operating. The stations after the payment have 2 years to set up and start working. It will be interesting to see how some stations will be able to cough out certain amounts. For a station like Radio Gold which has been off since 2019 many are wondering how the NCA expects them to cough out such an amount.
