Finally, the secret why Ewe people or the people living in the Volta Region are called number 9 is out. Ewes are the second largest ethnic group in Ghana with a population of 6.1 million. In Togo, they have a population of 3.1 million.
According to a post made by a popular Ghanaian on Twitter Kafui Dey, this is how they got the number 9 title and not the other way people thinks. He reveals the name came through the Miss Ghana contest in 1957. The lady who won the contest was from Alavanyo representing the Volta Region or Trans-Volta Togoland named Monica Amekofia. Her contesting number was 9. After she was declared as the winner, her contestant number which was number 9 became a popular name in the Volta Region and was used to represent the people of Trans-Volta Togoland or Voltarians.
