For one to understand the parables of Christ, his sayings must not be taken literally but one must go deep to know the actual meaning of what ever he says. Luke 16:19-31 which is a parable about the rich man and the poor man Lazarus is not an exception.
To understand this part, you aught to follow me to get the other parts in my other articles. Let's try and find out the meaning of the following statements made by Jesus Christ in this parable.
a) The rich man died and was buried means any body under the law has no salvation in this last days.
The Pharisees and the Israelites who bragged over being the children of God and righteous for having the laws were being told by Christ not to rely on it anymore for righteousness was not going to come through the laws given through Moses but the laws of Christ Jesus. The Pharisees and the Israelites as explained in my previous articles were the rich man Jesus spoke about in the parable(Luke 16:16, Rom.1:16-17, Gal.3:10-14).
b) He lifted his eyes and saw Lazarus in Abraham's bosom means:
The Pharisees knew the Apostles to be the followers of Christ but they did not follow him. So Christ was preaching to them to repent and follow him. If not they would die only to know they were not children of Abraham like they boasted of but rather the Apostles and his followers were the children of Abraham.
Moreover, Unless one accept Christ and be baptized in his name the person can not see the kingdom of God. Which the Pharisees, Scribes and elder of the Israelites at the time did not believe and baptize in him but the Apostles of Christ did. They even questioned the authority he used for his miracles. All because they didn't believe in him(Mark 11:27-33, John 3:1-2, Acts 4:13-16, 17-22).
Therefore seeing Lazarus in Abraham's bosom simply means those who do not believe in Christ will only die to see those who believe in him saved.
c) Send Lazarus dip his finger in water and cool my tongue is to send his Apostles to go and preach the gospel to the Jews first and the Gentiles.
The gospel of Christ Jesus is a living water. When you drink it, you will thirst no more (John 4:10). Just as he cried out at the great day of the feast, if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink(John 7:37).
So such statement was in the parable to tell the Jews disregarded his words that they would wish to have his gospel some day to come but they would not get it(Amos 8:11, 2Cor. 3:17, Acts 8:26-35).
You may follow me to get the last part of this parable to know the meaning of:
a) Be in torment in the flame
b) Gulf fixed between them
c) There are Moses and the Prophets
Please do well and share to spread the gospel. You may leave your comment as well. Peace unto you.
