Internationally renowned Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California and this saw the likes of African giants, such as Mr Eazi and Burna Boy sharing the page with world respected award winning music sensations, but sadly, no Ghanaian performed.
In a viral blog post by the respected Ameyaw Debrah, who had the privilege of covering the event, officially as an entertainment blogger selected from Ghana, he wished there was a Ghanaian artist on the show, which saw a festival crowd of over 150,000 and global live streaming of millions of viewers.
In the said post by Ameyaw Debrah, he asks that "So why wasn’t there any Ghanaian on the lineup, and how are artists even selected for Coachella, which is considered one of the most prestigious US music festivals? To play at Coachella is major validation and one of the best ways to break through to a huge audience," and he was quick to name five (5) leading Ghanaian artists, who can put the nations flag, on this influential stage and sadly for the many fans of the self claimed Dancehall King of Africa, his name was not even part.
His list of Ghanaian acts who could do this included Efya, Wiyaala, Samini, M.anifest and Stonebwoy.
With Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale, well known as great competition any day, this may well be that, the award winning and leading blogger will choose Stonebwoy over Shatta always. To affirm this, Blogger Debrah wrote concerning Stonebwoy that, "perhaps Ghana’s current biggest commercial music export, afropop, dancehall and reggae artist, Stonebwoy continues to excel in many diverse ways."
He goes on to assert that, Stonebwoy is a consummate recording and performing artist, known to excite crowds with his vocals and energy, who in 2015, won the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa and in 2018, was nominated again for it.
Touting further his pedigree to advance the fact that, he should be performing at the renowned music festival, he shares how Stonebwoy has also been nominated for MTV Africa Music Award in once shortlisted for MTV Europe Music Awards.
"His 2014 album, ‘Necessary Evil’, which consisted of twenty-nine tracks won Stonebwoy three Ghana Music Awards. His 2017 album, ‘Epistles of Mama’, which was dedicated his late mother had 24 track featuring Sean Paul, King Promise, Burna Boy and more. The album peaked at Number 13 on the Billboard World Album Chart. YouTube honored the Album for hitting over 10 million views," Ameyaw Debrah writes.
"Stonebwoy has performed at several international festivals such as Reggae Geel 2018, Reggae Sumfest 2018 (Montego Bay, Jamaica), Summerjam Festival (Cologne, Germany), and the Bomboclat Festival (Belgium). In 2019, Stonebwoy was part of the Africa To The World 3-day showcase at SXSW in Austin, Texas. He won the nod for ‘Favourite African Star’ at the 2019 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice, and has since collaborated with more international acts including Beenieman for his current single, ‘Shuga’. Stonebwoy has two annual concerts in Ghana ‘ATTW’ a free concert and ‘Bhim Concert’, a paid to attend show." he adds.
He concluded beautifully that, "With the world now paying attention to African music, hopefully any of these 5 and indeed any other Ghanaian musician would perform on the stage of a grand international music festival such as Coachella in the very near future."
