On the occasion of the celebration of International Earth Day, the Northern Advocacy Center for Peace and Climate Change – NACPaCC wants an open collaborative effort to mitigate the effects of climate change in the 5 regions of the north.
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated across the world on April 22 to highlight dangers associated with deforestation and land degradation whiles encouraging tree planting through advocacy and public sensitization campaigns. This year’s celebration was on the theme "Restore Our Earth"
NACPaCC through its partners is advocating for more trees to be planting in and around homes whilst calling on government, traditional authorities as well as the forestry commission to issue punitive measures and regulate indiscriminate and illegal felling of trees and dumping of refuse in Ghana’s forest reserves.
Over the past 2 years, the Northern Advocacy Center for Peace and Climate Change has planted 600 varieties of seedlings in some parts of Bamvum in the Tamale Metropolis. The CEO of NACPaCC told saganitvonline.com that, "the organization is mapping out areas to plant about 1,000 seedlings in the month of June 2021"
In an activity to climax the celebration, Deputy District manger of forestry commission, Mrs. Aba Kusah whilst addressing the gathering at the Ahmadia Junior High School emphasized on the need for a concerted effort to deal with illegal logging of trees. She urged the students to plant a tree each in their various homes to compliment the illegal activities of timber operators.
She however cautioned residents living in Tamale to desist from using the forest reserve as a place of convenience.
Although tropical forests cover less part of the natural lands, Mr Mohammed Shani of the environmental unit of Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly believes that, the only way to reach Ghana’s climate goal to is adopt a change in attitude and direction.
Meanwhile, Lecturer at the University Development for Student (UDS) Dr Baba Iddrisu Musah, who spoke on 'Climate Change: a Perspective of Northern Region said, heat levels, unpredictable rainfall and drought are some of the causes of climate change. He therefore admonished the gathering to plant more trees to mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.
The program was participatory as students were asked to contribute to the discussions. Representatives of Sedarvp, Abubakari shayibu and Mumin Yussif also contributed in making the celebration a successful.
