Have you ever wondered why Voltarians, especially Ewes, are called Number 9?

The story is very simple… the first Miss Ghana beauty contest organized by the Social welfare with support from Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on the 4th March 1957 saw contestants from all over the regions in the country. It happened, that the contestant representing the Trans-Volta Togoland; Miss Monica Amekuefia was the 9th contestant with the serial number 9. Miss Monica had unique and outstanding ways of performing her task assigned to her as a result, catching the attention of the whole nation.

It also turn up that, Miss Monica Amekoafia (the No. 9 contestant) representing the Trans-Volta Togoland (today Volta Region), became the winner of the first edition of the Miss Ghana contest in 1957. Since then the people from the Trans-Volta Togoland, and the today Volta Region are called by the name Number 9.

The Miss Ghana beauty pageant is the biggest and oldest national pageant in Ghana. The first contest in Ghana was stage at the Accra Community Centre, on March 4, 1957 which saw contestants representing the Trans-Volta Togoland, Western Province, Eastern Province, Ashanti and Northern Territories.

Miss Miss Monica Amekoafia was born on June 30, 1934 in Alavanyo, a town in today’s Volta Region. She won the district and regional pageant; and finally, at the end of the national contest, the judges and the entire audience considered her the most beautiful among contestants, hence wining the national award.

The statue of the late Miss Monica Amekoafia (Miss Ghana 1957), was unveiled at a brief ceremony at Hohoe to immortalize the late Amekoafia as an instrument of inspiration to the present generation, especially the youth.
