5 Dangerous Food Combinations Ghanaians Eat Together That Could Seriously Affect Their Health

Most of the times when I see the food combination my Ghanaians eat, I just shake my head and say to myself "may God help us".

Eating the right kind of food at the right time is what helps you attain and maintain good health. However, you may not be aware that it is equally important to keep in mind various food combination that can actually prove to be harmful. The following article discusses some food combinations that you should avoid!

1- Fruits with Yogurt

I put fruits with yogurt first because there is this myth in Ghana that fruits when taken with yogurt is healthy. Those of you who have been believing the myth that eating fruits and yoghurt is a very healthy choice may feel disheartened with the fact that it is not so. When the acid from fruits comes in contact with the protein in yoghurt, it not only affects the digestive fibres but it also makes it toxic. This toxic food combination can lead to food allergies too and some serious health issues that comes with allergies.

2- Potatoes and meat

A steak and fries might sound like a delicious meal. Unfortunately, it’s not the healthiest combination. The starch in potatoes needs alkalotic digestive fluids, while the proteins in meat need acidic digestive fluids. When you eat them together, the foods can end up causing heartburn, gas and other digestive issues. Don’t eat meat and fried potatoes.

3- (Beans and Bread) Protein and starch together

Beans with bread, for example, are popular examples of protein and starch. “This is the worst combination,” Dr. Gioffre says. “They cancel each other out.” The protein (the beans) is digested by the acid, called pepsin, in the stomach. The starch, the bread or the macaroni, leads to the secretion of an enzyme called ptyalin, which creates an alkaline condition. So they neutralize each other — this makes your gut “a breeding ground for bad bacteria and sets off an inflammation cascade,” Dr. Gioffre says.

4- Cashew nuts and Cassava flakes (Garri)

Firstly, these are seeds, not nuts, so you’ve been misled all this time. Their shells are deadly, and have a coating of anacardic acid, which can burn your skin if handled incorrectly, as well as give you a nastily upset stomach. Additionally, cashews must be cooked or steamed before consumption, as in their raw state they contain urushiol, a chemical which is also found in poison ivy, and can be fatal if consumed in large enough amounts. So if you see cashews growing in the wild on your travels, don’t pick or eat them talk more of combining the seeds with cassava flakes (garri) which is acidic and starchy.

5- Cereals and Milk

Milk contains casein, and orange juice contains acid. Together, they curdle the dairy and also destroy the enzyme present in the starchy cereal. To avoid this, have fruit juice at least an hour before or after the cereals.
