Benjamin William Quartey-Papafio born on June 25, 1859 was a physician pioneer and a politician on the Gold Coast. He is the first Ghanaian to obtain a medical degree and the first to practice as an Orthodox- trained physician.

Quartey-Papafio had his education at CMS Grammar school and Foura Bay college in Freetown, Sierra Leone before travelling to study in Britain. He gained a B.A in degree from Durham university, he enrolled as a medical student at St.Batholomew's hospital medical college in 1882 before moving to Edinburgh university. He graduated from Edinburgh with a degree in M.B and M.Ch in 1886 and became a member of the Royal college of surgeons.

He returned back to the then Gold Coast and became a medical officer to the Gold coast government service from 1888 until 1905, and also in private practice until his demise on September 14,1924.
