"This type of disease is very difficult to detect" - Dr. Frank at Rigde Hospital

Mr. Frank Ayimadu who is a Registered Dietician and Dr. at Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Rigde) and Mrs Nana Adwoa Kunadu Dsane, who is Bsc,CEMBA, PhD, ChPA (Candidate), Deputy Director, Medical and Scientific Research centre, University of Ghana Medical Centre. Mr, Frank and Mrs Kunadu Speaking on United television on Adeakyea Nsroma Health line programs held by Madam Yaa Krama on a topic "Ensuring Thyroid Health"

Mr. Frank explain Thyroid Gland as a general term for a medical condition that keeps your thyroid from making the right amount of hormones. He said your thyroid typically makes hormones that keep your body functioning normally. When the thyroid makes too much thyroid hormone, your body use energy too quickly. And Mrs Nana Adwoa Kunadu Dsane The Founder and President of Thyroid Ghana Foundation, who undergone surgery for a thyroid problem, explain Thyroid disorders as a conditions that affect the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland in front of the neck.

She added, the thyroid has important roles to regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body such as; 1. Its produce liquid which help for digestion, 2. Help brain development, 3. Help the development of female breast, 4. Responsible for the flow of female period, 5. Regulates our blood pressure etc. She again said, the thyroid gland is located below the Adam's apple wrapped around the trachea (windpipe) that uses iodine to produce vital hormones.

Mrs Nana Adwoa Kunadu Dsane share her story about this disease that, she was a thyroid patient that lead her to form this "Thyroid Ghana Foundation" to create awareness of the disease. She said " I fell stick for almost 8 months, I became slim and dark in colour and know one can even recognized me. I spent a lot of money at hospital and at that point no one was able to detect actual cause of my disease due to different symptoms it generate, until I met one doctor who is my friend and ask me to run a thyroid test, before they were able to found out that, it was Thyroid disorder which is causing me all that pain".

She said, the disease has little attention so when you're having it, it will be difficult for doctors to detect it quickle unless it appears on your throat or they run a test. So she form that group to create awareness and also to educate the public.

Mr. Frank also said, the problems can occur if the thyroid overproduces hormones, which is known as hyperthyroidism or underproduces hormones, which is called hypothyroidism. These issues may also result in the growth of the thyroid, and the common symptoms are; 1 one may experiencing anxiety, 2.irritability and nervousness, 3. Having trouble sleeping. Losing weight, 4.Having an enlarged thyroid gland or a goitre, 5.Having muscle weakness and tremors, 6. Experiencing irregular menstrual periods or having your menstrual cycle stop, 7.feeling sensitive to heat. Having vision problems or eye irritation, 8. Feeling tired, 9. Gaining weight, 10. Experiencing forgetfulness Having frequent and heavy menstrual period, 11. Having dry and coarse hair, 12. Having a hoarse voice, 13. Experiencing an intolerance to cold temperatures, etc. Due to this it is very difficult to detect it early at the hospitals.

He said, woman are those who are at higher risk of contracting this disorder than men according study, because its comes with different types of symptoms, that make it difficult for doctor to detect it early. He added that, this disorder alone can affect your liver function, kidney and any other organs, so when you go to hospital and they detect that you have problem on your liver or kidney, they will only give you medication on that alone while the actual disease is still there. So if anyone is facing certain problems(illness) which is findings it difficult to treat, that person should go for thyroid test and see, in other to receive early treatment because that disease is very serious to detect, if its doesn't appears on your throat.

Mr. Frank and Mrs Nana Adwoa Kunadu Dsane share some way one can do to prevent him or her of getting one. They said Eating food which contain iodine like Greenleaf's vegetables, almond nuts, tiger nuts, fishes, lettuce, cabbage, cassava, etc and also one should control his or her stress because, there is no permanent cure but only management and also everyone can be at risk. They advice the public that, if we fall sick, we should first go to hospital than going to prayer champ and we shouldn't see all diseases as it is the cause of devil because our eating habit is one of the major way we get some of the disease from.

Please you can help like and share to educate the public by creating awareness about this disorder thank you.
