Your stool colour and their meaning

Many people do not know that stool colour is very important to human beings. Knowing your stool colour helps you to know state of your health and also how your digestive systems are functioning.

NORMAL STOOL (FAECES)

The normal stool which is usually light to dark brown indicates that your body especially the digestive system is functioning correctly.

GREEN STOOLS

If stool passes through the intestine quickly without having enough time for the bile to be digested and broken to provide the normal brownish colour. If these happens it means that the person has diarrhoea.

Also Green stools also indicate that you have taken in too much green vegetables. So you must limit the amount of green vegetables intake in your body as the saying goes too much of everything is bad.

YELLOW, GREASY, AND FOUL SMELLING STOOL

This also means that the intestine’s inability to digest and absorb fat because of some diseases of the intestinal lining. This is because the pancreas is unable to manufacture adequate digestive enzymes. The yellowness, greasiness, and foul smell is due to the undigested fat.

BRIGHT RED STOOLS

The most common cause of this bright red-coloured stool in adults is bleeding from hemorrhoids. And in children it may be the tear in tissues surrounding the anus. Also it may be cause by infections of the intestines, tumours and other related factors.

BLACK TARRY STOOLS

When your stool is in this state, it may be due to a large amount of bleeding into the digestive system, most often caused by the upper bleeding of the oesophagus , stomach and duodenum. These stools are very sticky and foul smelling.

It may also be from blood from nosebleeds or from dental procedures or mouth injuries can also cause of black stool since the blood can be swallowed. You must seek medical care because this stool should not be ignored.

CLAY-COLOURED OR WHITE STOOLS (PALE STOOLS)

This may be seen with diseases of the liver or bile ducts. It may also be caused by pancreatic cancer that blocks the bile ducts. Lack of these bile can cause stools to lose it normal colour.
