Barely six days ago the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) laboratory workers threatened to strike over the instantaneous re-assigning of two medical specialists, Lesley Osei and Eunice Agyemang.Lesley Osei and Eunice Agyemang Ahmed were assigned to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Laboratory Service Department (LSD) two years ago by the Medical Director as haematologists.
Haematology involves the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have disorders of the blood and bone marrow. An Haematologist is the doctor who studied haematology. They usually do not spend quality time in laboratories but rather with patients.
In the Chairman's statement he claimed these medical Doctors were not dispatching their duties properly.“Our practice is guided by regulation, so you cannot just pick anybody to work in the lab if the person is not licensed and trained to discharge that duty.”He said.
Act 857 1.Define Medical Laboratory Science as "The study and practice of the laboratory investigation necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by health professionals including Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist, and Medical Laboratory Scientist."
The commencement of this one-week strike means that all laboratory testing including COVID-19 testing will be halted in the laboratory untill they call off the strike.
Ernest Badu Boateng, the Chairman of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital KATH Chapter for Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientist (GAMLS) said their decision to strike is the consensus agreement of its members.
“From tomorrow Thursday to next week Wednesday, 26th May, 2021 all laboratory services would be withdrawn; from the infectious diseases and research lab and the blood bank lab. This means COVID testing and surgical cases that will require blood will halt.If our demands are not met by Wednesday, then we will decide on the next line of action to get the professional suppression and oppression out of our way...
“We practice laboratory science; they practice medicine. The two are different by law under Act 857 and so all that we are saying is that they should be in their lane. They should practice their medicine and also leave us to practice our laboratory science as defined by law that was passed by parliament in 2013.”He accurately said.
Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Medical Association(GMA) has declared earnestly that the decision as ill-formed and disturbing. He entrusted that the Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) will make logical decisions to create conducive working conditions for all its staffs.
