Stroke: symptoms, causes and prevention

A stroke may affect one side of your body or part of one side. You may be at an increased risk for falling if you have difficulty moving your leg muscles. You may have any of the following: Inability to move your arm, leg, or one side of your face (paralysis).

What causes Stroke?

There are two main causes of stroke: a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Some people may have only a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain, known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA), that doesn't cause lasting symptoms.


What are the symptoms of Stroke?

  • Trouble speaking and understanding what others are saying
  • Problems seeing in one or both eyes
  • Trouble in walking
  • Paralysis or numbness of the face, arm or leg
  • Headache

How can I prevent Stroke?

  • Quitting tobacco use
  • Lowering the amount of cholesterol and saturated fat in your diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking alcohol in moderation, if at all
  • Avoiding illegal drugs
