Good News To All Ghanaians As China Declares This Message

Xi's promise comes as part of a forum between China and African states focused on trade and security, which is being held in Diamniadio, near Senegal's seaside capital.

In a speech delivered via videolink to a China-Africa summit near Dakar, Senegal's capital, China's President Xi Jinping pledged on Monday to provide one billion Covid vaccine doses to Africa.

The Chinese leader stated that his country would donate 600 million doses directly. Other sources of 400 million doses, such as investments in production sites, would provide an additional 400 million doses.

Xi's promise comes as part of a forum between China and African states focused on trade and security, which is being held in Diamniadio, near Senegal's seaside capital.

According to the Chinese embassy in Dakar, China invests heavily in Africa and is the continent's largest trading partner, with direct trade worth over $200 billion in 2019.

Vaccination rates in Africa are low when compared to the rest of the world, with many states relying on foreign donations due to a lack of local production facilities and prohibitive costs of mass purchases.

"We must continue to fight together against Covid," Xi said at the summit. "We must prioritize the protection of our people and close the vaccination gap."
