“I Was Forced to Sleep With Strangers” - Lady Says How She Got HIV

On the night of November 30th, Citizen TV's Waihiga Mwaura hosted a live discussion in Nakuru, which was attended by various persons who have been personally or indirectly touched by HIV/AIDS. This decision was taken in honour of World AIDS Day on December 1st, whose major goal is to eradicate disparities surrounding AIDS and other critical health issues throughout the world.

Joyce Adhiambo Odhiambo was one of the forum's panellists, and she brazenly declared that she is HIV positive and works in the sex industry. She described how she became infected in 1998 and why she chose her current 'professional' route.

My history is not a happy one since I contracted HIV and AIDS as a result of my societal standards of behaviour. In 1998, after the death of my father, I was compelled to have unsecured intercourse with a stranger in order to purify my family.

The elders had issued the command. I didn't have any tall relatives to assist me to get work after that because I didn't have any certifications. That's when I decided to work as a sex worker to support myself and my children," she reminisced.
