Health Implications and Reasons Why FDA Says Ghanaians Shouldn't Take Ceres Apple Juice.

The Food and Drugs Authority has recalled some batches of Ceres 100% Apple Juice. The regulator issued a statement on Friday, October 15, 2021. According to the regulator, their decision follows information received from the International Food Safety Network (INFOSAN) and the Manufacturer of the product, Pioneer Foods Groceries (Pty) Limited, South Africa confirming that extensive laboratory tests and consultations with their local supplier of the apple juice concentrate, revealed that I contained levels of mycotoxin-patulin higher than the regulatory threshold.

In this piece of article, I will bring to your attention the possible effects of mycotoxin-patulin. Again, I will bring you the history of the toxin and the possible effects that one can get when they refuse to adhere to the FDA warnings. Again, I will offer opinions on how the FDA must do to ensure that their warning sinks into the system effectively for obvious reasons.

Mycotoxin-patulin is a naturally occurring toxin produced by certain moulds (fungi) and can be found in food. According to the World Health Organisation website, these moulds grow on a variety of crops and foodstuffs including cereals, nuts, spices, dried fruits, apples and coffee beans. Because of the toxic nature of the moulds, the authorities and product manufacturers are encouraged to monitor and ensure that levels of mycotoxins in foodstuffs on the market are as low as possible. This is because;

Mycotoxin has been linked to long-term effects on health, including the induction of cancers and immune deficiency. The acute symptoms for animals include liver, spleen and kidney damage and toxicity to the immune system. For humans, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances and vomiting have been reported. These 5 effects on humans have been reported and anybody who refuses to adhere to the FDA warnings about Ceres 100% apple juice stands the chance of suffering; either long-term or short-term.

FDA should make the announcement more prominent. Again, they should make their officials visit places and find out if retailers are selling them out. Because, in Ghana here, profit is the goal and if someone uses the money to purchase products, he/she wouldn’t allow them to go to waste because of a certain warning. Again, there might be some people- ordinary citizens and retailers who have not heard the directive. There is the need for FDA to use information centres, social media and television to make their announcement.

However, I will personally urge you all to stay away from the Ceres 100% Apple Juice to circumvent any dire consequences on your health. They will make another batch with low mycotoxin-patulin, and you can continue having your delight. Thank you.
