COVID19: GHS to ensure equity in the distribution of vaccines using biometric

Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced the deployment of biometric devices in gathering the data of persons who take the jabs to ensure equity in the distribution of the vaccines across the country.

GHS has engaged the services of a biometric deployment company from the United Kingdom(UK) by the name of Simtrix to deploy the biometric machines for the gathering of the data of persons who take the second jab and persons who are to take the jabs for the first time.

GHS made the announcement at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and demonstration of equipment in readiness for the exercise between the Uk -based company in Accra last week.

Briefing the media on the need to engage the services of the company, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the Director-General of GHS said the biometric data gathering will ensure equity in the distribution of the vaccines in the second phase of the distribution of the jabs in the country.

He said the deployment of the biometric device was to ensure persons who took the jabs in the first phase do not come back to take it again in the second phase of the nationwide exercise for the vaccination against the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

According to him, equity in the distribution of vaccines in the second phase of the vaccination exercise will ensure everybody gets vaccinated in the country.

He said instead of persons given cards after vaccination, the details of persons who get vaccinated will be captured by biometric means.

He added that when people come to the vaccination centres their biometric details will be taken to know if they have taken part in the first phase of the exercise.

This will avoid the scenario of some persons on the blind side of medical officers taking the jabs more than twice in the country as per the World Health Organization’s guidelines on the containment of the spread of the deadly pandemic.
