He was addressing the ninth biennial conference of the College of Health Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.
He pledged strong support to Ghana’s drive towards strengthening research and systems to tackle the flu-like virus.
Africa, he said, needed to pump more resources into critical care capacities and health systems to deal with future pandemics.
Ghana has put in place a vaccine manufacturing committee, tasked with the responsibility of helping to build the capacity of domestic pharmaceutical companies.
The committee has developed a roadmap and held stakeholder consultations for the establishment of a national vaccine institute.
The target is to build local manufacturing plants to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines alongside other vaccines.
Dr Chisaka Kasolo said availability of vaccine was critical to the defeat of the pandemic that has devastated the economies of countries across the world and change the way of life of the people.
