When you consume too much salt, the short-term effects are noticeable shortly thereafter. Common short-term side effects of consuming too much salt include swollen hands and feet or a swollen face. Some people become bloated because of water retention or feel excessively thirsty after a salty meal.

Eating too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure, which is linked to conditions like heart failure and heart attack, kidney problems, fluid retention, stroke and osteoporosis. You might think this should mean you need to cut out salt completely, but salt is actually an important nutrient for the human body.

People eat on average about 3,400 mg of sodium per day. However, the Dietary Guidelines for people recommends limiting sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day—that's equal to about 1 teaspoon of salt!

Black pepper oil typically does not cause side effects. Black pepper might have a burning aftertaste. Taking large amounts of black pepper by mouth, which can accidentally get into the lungs, has been reported to cause death



If you have been diagnosed with calcium oxalate kidney stones, your doctor may recommend that you limit your intake of foods that contain higher amounts of oxalate, such as beets, black pepperblack tea, chocolate, nuts, potatoes, rhubarb, soy products, and spinach.
