Residents of both Ada East and West have had a sigh of relief after the Minister’s Press briefing on corona virus on the 19th of May, 2020. For the past two weeks, the residents of both districts in the Ada Traditional area have been thrown into fear and panic after a reportage that both districts have recorded ten positive corona virus cases.
Both districts form the Ada Traditional Council presided over by one paramount chief, Nene Kabu Abram Akuaku III. The Council has two constituencies with two different MPs. Each constituency form a District Assembly.
On the 3rd of May, 2020, the health director in the Ada East District in an interview with the only local radio station in the district said the district has recorded 7 positive cases of the corona virus. His compatriot in the Ada West District also stated that, 3 of the cases have been recorded at the Ada West District making the total of ten (10) in the Ada traditional area.
This announcement has brought fear and panic among residents. The fear of the people heightened when the health director said 3 out of the 7 cases in the Ada East Districts are from Kasseh, a major marketing area in the district. Four of the cases were also reported be recorded at Ada – Foah, another minor marketing area in the district.
Moreover, people were afraid to go to the market because the safety precautions laid down by the Ghana Health Service are not duly observed especially, social distancing. On every market day, the market is packed to full capacity with a lot of people moving about without face masks and the few who have it on do not wear it properly. There are no veronica buckets at sight in the market and hand sanitizers are very expensive. This has sparked the fear among the traders of a possible outbreak of the disease in the market.
However, in a press briefing at the ministry of information in Accra, the director general of health, Dr. Aboagye has mentioned that, Ada West, Ada East and Dodowa districts are the districts that are yet to record any positive case as at 19th May, 2020.
This announcement has brought some relief to the entire population in these two districts of the Ada traditional area. However, residents are questioning the reason behind the announcement made by the district director of health in the district on the radio station on the 3rd of May, 2020. This has caused for alarm as both DCEs of the two districts have confirm same report.
In the meantime, residents are going about their normal duties with few observing the health protocols laid down. It is observed at Kasseh that, most people are not putting on the face masks which is now compulsory for every person. No one is ensuring the enforcement of these protocols as well in the markets and other major work places. Though the district is yet to record a case as announced at the Press briefing, it is necessary the appropriate authorities will put all the measures in place to prevent the virus from coming into the district.
