It won't be a surprise if people mistake Autism for Down Syndrome. Many also think the two are the same. But, they are two different conditions all together. Today, we are looking at the difference between them and if one person can have both conditions.
Down Syndrome is simply a condition where someone has more chromosome than necessary for a normal human being. Chromosomes are genes in the body which determines how a baby's body is developed and functions as it grows during pregnancy and after birth..
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. It is a developmental disability and it is lifelong because it has no cure. But it can be managed.
Can a person have the two conditions? Yes, very possible. Over the years, there has been increase in diagnosis of people having both conditions. It is referred to as 'dual diagnosis'.
