Vice President donates cash to NGO: The irony of a noble gesture.

The number two public servant of Ghana, Vice President Alhaji Mahmudu Bawumia have donated cash to a private charity organization to use the money to purchase incubators for government hospitals. This gestures, in the minds of many people, sound ironic.

The provision of essential hospital equipment to health facilities, especially to government hospitals, is the sole responsibility of government. Individuals and private organizations through their foundations also do assist in this regard because, government alone can not adequately resource all its health institutions throughout the country.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have always complimented the efforts of governments over the years. For instance, Peace Fm's Kokrokoo Charity Foundation has been soliciting funds to buy incubators for Anti-natal care centres for saving the lives of children who are born prematurely. This, they have been doing for some year now. Very commendable effort.

However, what many have not yet comes to terms with, is for a public official, in this instance, the vice President to donate to a private fund his money, in return, the private foundation uses the money to buy incubators and donate it back to government hospitals.

In other words, the vice President, whose primary duty is to assist the President to make sure incubators are available at the hospital, has now donated money to an NGO to undertake that job.

For some, it sounds populist and a dereliction of duty. It is an irony born out of parochial partisan interest.

The vice President is warming up to contest the flagbearaship of his part, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He therefore dies these things to further boost his chances, we understand. But there are other level of these actions that undermines his present office.

Every action must be viewed in two phases-a potential presidential candidate and his status as the incumbent vice President. He must take every decision taking into consideration that fact, or else he sends a wrong signals which depicts that of an irresponsible vice President chasing his selfish interest.
