Beans are well-known for promoting gas. However, they don’t cause gas in everyone, and they don’t necessarily cause it if they are properly prepared. Also, note that there are some medical conditions (i.e. IBS) that can make people especially sensitive to the effects of certain carbohydrates.

Legumes are high in a group of carbohydrates, known as oligosaccharides. They are particularly high in oligos known as galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and fructans, which are poorly digested or sometimes not digested at all. When these undigested foods reach the colon, they are broken down by the gut bacteria causing gas. However, oligos are water-soluble, which means that cooking and processing methods can alter their content in these foods, preventing flatulence in many people. For example, canned beans are lower in oligos than regular cooked beans. Additionally, if you cook legumes in water, strain them, and discard the remaining liquid you will also achieve a similar effect. Finally, sprouting beans can also lower their content of oligos.

Remember that you should not restrict a food group from your diet unless your dietitian recommends it. If you can digest legumes perfectly, be sure to enjoy them because they are a great source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants (phytochemicals).

Flatulence, though, allows for a painless means of escape for this gas.

Sometimes you may experience more flatulence than usual. Increased farting can stem from a natural body reaction, or in some cases, an underlying medical condition. Factors that can affect how much you fart include:

Time of day

A buildup of gas-producing foods and swallowed air during the day may make you more flatulent in the evening. Also, you’re more likely to fart when the muscles in the intestines are stimulated. When you’re about to have a bowel movement, for example, those muscles are moving stool to the rectum. But other activities can also trigger flatulence, such as exercise or even coughing.

You may know your troublesome foods, so be aware of them if you’re concerned about being gassy. How can I stop farting so much?

1. Preventing increased gas may be as simple as adjusting your diet. If you’re lactose intolerant, your doctor will advise you to avoid milk-based products. Using a lactase supplement that provides the enzyme to make digesting dairy easier may also be an option.

2. To decrease your gas, you may want to stop drinking carbonated beverages.

3. If you’re especially sensitive to beans or other common culprits, eating smaller portions or swapping them out for other healthy foods may be options for you. Be careful not to suddenly boost your fiber intake, as that can also cause gas problems.

What can be done to prevent excess farting?

No matter the cause of your excess farting, there are some things you can do today to try to get it under control. Some good strategies include:

1. Avoid foods you know usually cause you to fart. You might find it helpful to keep a food journal and note which foods cause you the least and most amounts of gas. Stick to eating foods that cause you the least amount of gas.

2. Try eating more frequent and smaller meals throughout the day. This reduces the amount of stress on your digestive system, hopefully reducing the amount of gas you experience.

3. Eat and drink more slowly. Eating and drinking fast increases the amount of air you swallow. Eating and drinking more slowly can reduce this and hopefully reduce how much you fart.

4. Exercise regularly to prevent gas buildup in your digestive tract. Healthy adults should get at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day.

5. Eat fewer fatty foods. These foods slow digestion and give food in your digestive tract more time to ferment, resulting in excessive gas.

6. Try an over-the-counter gas remedy. Medications containing simethicone, such as Gas-X or Mylanta Gas, are designed to break up gas bubbles in the digestive tract. Medications such as Beano are meant to decrease the amount of gas produced during the body’s digestion of beans and other high-fiber foods.

7. Give up smoking and chewing gum. This can make you swallow excess air, which builds up in your digestive tract.
