Is it possible for women to get pregnant while they are breastfeeding their baby?

There are so many questions that women seek answers to especially after delivery. One of the questions that are asked by breastfeeding mothers is, ''is it possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding?'' Most of these women somehow believed that breastfeeding prevents pregnancy. Keep on reading as I delve more into whether or not it is possible to get pregnant whilst breastfeeding.

Can breastfeeding be engaged in as a contraceptive method?

The answer is yes. Breastfeeding can be used as a birth control method. It is called lactational amenorrhea. Oxytocin, a hormone responsible for milk production, also suppresses the brain from making hormones that enable the ovaries to grow an egg. As such fewer eggs are released which drastically lowers the chances of fertilization. The best result is when breastfeeding is done exclusively. Exclusive breastfeeding is when mothers breastfeed their babies for six months without any supplementary feeding. It involves breastfeeding at least four times during the day and two times during the night.

Can one get pregnant whilst breastfeeding?

Yes. Breastfeeding mothers can get pregnant whilst breastfeeding their babies. There is a 5% chance of getting pregnant if exclusive breastfeeding is been done. It is important to understand that ovulation precedes fertilization. As such exclusive breastfeeding enables oxytocin to be released which inhibits ovulation thereby reducing the chances of getting pregnant. What this means is that menstruation may be absent for a few months after delivery indicating that one cannot get pregnant. As one awaits menstruation to start before she knows her period is back, ovulation will take place first and if she has unprotected intercourse with her partner, it can result in another pregnancy.

In order to ensure that you don't get pregnant whilst breastfeeding, it is advisable to use other contraceptive methods to guarantee the optimum result. For a safe and healthy future pregnancy, it is recommended that women can get pregnant after at least 18 months of delivery.
