High blood pressure (hypertension) is a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure is a very common condition worldwide and also in Ghana. It has been shown to occur in 4.5 per cent to about 50 percent of people depending on the population. This means when you take a group of 100 people at any point in time, up to about 50 of them may have high blood pressure.
Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality in Ghana. The disease can go undetected for years and as a result complications and conditions can develop after enough damage to the body has occurred. Prolonged hypertension can thicken and harden the arteries causing a condition known as atherosclerosis. This disease process is characterized by plaque buildup along the arterial walls which decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart and body.
