Spiritual marriage; court orders psychiatric examination of woman

An unemployed woman, strongly believed to be hooked on hard drugs, arrested by the police for attacking and stabbing the mother in the neck, hands and back, with a kitchen knife, has been ordered to undergo psychiatric examination.

The 24-year old, has attacked and inflicted knife wounds on her 46-year old single mother because she claims the mother is a witch and that she is sexually involved with her (daughter) spiritually.

It is simply by miracle that the victim survived. Such was the fury with which the accused carried out the attack that the kitchen knife broke and got stuck in the neck of the victim.

Neighbors, who rushed to her aid, first sent her to the Abokobi Health Centre, where she was referred to the 37 Military Hospital, because of the life-threatening nature of the injuries she suffered.

The unemployed woman has been standing trial at the Adentan circuit court and has been convicted for causing unlawful harm.

The psychiatric examination report on her would help the court, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Balokah, to determine the appropriate punishment to give to her for what she did.

She would get to know of her punishment, come December 21.

Police Superintendent Patience Mario had earlier told the court that the victim, a trader and a single mother, has been living together with the accused and her younger brother at Abladjei, not far from Abokobi and taking care of them, since their father abandoned the family.

The accused, without any provocation, grabbed a kitchen knife and started stabbing the mother on different parts of her body – hands, in the neck and on her back with the knife.

The knife, according Supt. Mario broke and got stuck in her (mother’s) neck.

The basis of the savagely attack is that the mother, according to the accused person, the mother is married to her spiritually.

The shouts of the mother for help attracted some neighbors, who rescued and rushed her to the Abokobi health centre and later transferred to the 37 Military hospital.

She has now been discharged from the hospital.
