A Magistrate Court at Wamfie in the Dormaa East of the Bono Region was thrown into commotion as a murder suspect, who was appearing before the court, made a daring attempt to flee, as the handful of police prosecutors and investigators, joined by the court clerks gave him a hot chase.
The suspect, Kwabena Sampana ran with the police officers and the court clerks for a distance of more than two kilometres before he was re-captured and brought back to face the law.
Kwabena Sampana has been arrested together with Kwabena Oppong for allegedly murdering one Kofi Kyere.
The two are said to have killed Kofi Kyere at a village called Kwamedwomokrom in the Dormaa West District.
The two men as it has been the normal practice with murder cases had been sent to the Magistrate Court presided over by Dzifa Azumah to be remanded in police custody as the case docket is sent to the Attorney General’s Department for study and direction.
Kwabena Sampana was in handcuffs but when the case was called the handcuffs were removed by the police officers to enable him to enter the witness box.
He however, had other ideas, saw that as a God-sent opportunity – time to escape from justice.
Before everybody knew what was happening, he had taken to his heels and was sprinting like Usain Bolt. Police Chief Inspector Robert Apelkiwine, the prosecutor, other police officers present and the court clerks would however not allow him to run away from justice.
They gave him a hot chase until they caught up with him, recaptured and brought back to the court. He was ordered to be held in police custody.
Police Chief Inspector Apelkiwine says Kwabena Sampana, is going to be additionally charged with escaping from lawful custody.
The question as to why a murder suspect would make such a daring attempt in a secured environment still remains unanswered.
