We Cannot Pardon Josephine; Owusu Bempah Wasn’t Spared – Lawyer Ampaw

A private legal practitioner, Maurice Ampaw Esq., has argued that the 28-year-old Josephine Panyin Mensah who faked her pregnancy and kidnapping in Takoradi deserves no sympathy from the judges. According to him, the offences committed by the young woman are grave and must be treated without any compromises on the laws of the nation.

Lawyer Ampaw explained that if Rev. Owusu Bempah was arrest and tried for verbally threatening an assault on a civilian, Josephine should equally be made to face the full rigours of the law. He added that calls for the desperate woman to be pardoned are unfounded, adding that the trend at which some Ghanaians have resorted to faking crimes in the pursuit of incriminating others or seeking favours must be stopped.

He noted that Josephine’s case will be a perfect example to deter others from ever staging kidnap or misleading police that a crime has been committed against them. Lawyer Ampaw stressed that the economic loss the country has incurred for conducting an investigation into the matter is huge and that must equally reflect the sanctions the court applies on her for her crimes.

“We cannot pardon her. She must be used as a lesson for women. Why would you cause fear and panic, and mislead police officers? Do you know the economic loss you have caused the country?

“She has committed fraud against the country. Do you know how much money the state has spent to unravel the truth? We can't allow this. The damage is too much. Just as well allowed Owusu Bempah to go through the process, let her also face it.”

Lawyer Ampaw emphasized that Josephine Panyin Mensah acted dishonestly, and threw the entire nation into panic. He noted that the consequences of her actions had cast doubt on the security of the Western Region, which is a host of Ghana’s most important oil and gas and mining resources.

He noted that such behaviours scare off investment and need not be entertained.  Josephine Panyin Mensah is being tried at the Sekondi High Court for crimes committed, involving conspiracy to commit crime, and misleading public officials.
