Anti LGBTQ+ Bill is Needless. It Will Only Get Ghana Blacklisted- Gabby Otchere Asare-Darko

The debate as to whether to criminalise homosexuality and its related activities continue to attract central position in the socio-political discussions in Ghana. The multiplicity of the views that have been expressed so far underscore the magnitude of the subject matter. A cursory assessment of the myriad of divergent views reveals that majority of Ghanaians support the move for criminalization.

Nonetheless, there are handful of persons who share contrary opinion including Gabby Otchere Asare-Darko, a private legal practitioner and a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

Sharing his views on social media today, Mr Gabby Otchere Asare-Darko believes that the bill seeking to criminalise LGBT+ is needless because such activities are already illegal in Ghana. Besides, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the citizens that homosexuality and its related activities will not be legalize in Ghana.

"Gay+ activities are already illegal in our country. The president has given his word he won't legalize it. This Bill can only serves one purpose: to get Ghana blacklisted for hating. Surely, the promoters of the Bill cannot be oblivious of this", he noted.

Unpopular as this opinion might look, it shows clearly what may happen once the bill is passed into law. Like many developing countries in Africa, Ghana is highly dependent on foreign aid which usually come with certain conditions. There is no doubt that the country at its current state cannot survive without the help from donors. Therefore, the country must tread cautiously in making any decision regarding the criminalization of LGBTQ+.
