Ghanaians are no strangers to the news of dual citizenship. Almost every week, you will hear about a Ghanaian holding another citizenship with some going as far as getting naturalized in another country and subsequently renouncing their Ghanaian passport for the other one.
However, this case is slightly different from that of the usual; rather than just having a second citizenship, Honorable Sarah Adwoa Sarfo has been accused of holding a Green Card in addition to her Ghanaian passport.
Green Card refers to the colloquial name given to an identification document issued by a nation where an individual intends to reside indefinitely and get naturalized. It is also known as “permanent residence” which provides the holder with many rights and privileges such as being able to work and live in that country without any limitations for an extended period (generally five years) or attain citizenship after meeting certain conditions.
In case you are wondering what exactly does a Green Card do for you, above is all you need to know about it.
A social media influencer by name Fremah disclosed in one of her interactions that she had evidence that Adwoa Sarfo of Dome Kwabenya constituency is holding American Green Card. She said contrary to what Ghanaians know that the NPP MP is in US because of her children, she knows for sure that Adwoa Sarfo is in US as a citizen of that country. Fremah added that the embattled MP is working to secure a green card for her husband so the family can permanently reside in the States.
She however gave the minister for gender and social protection 24 hours to come out with a statement if she (Fremah) was lying. She threatened that she will make the Ghanaian MP lose her US citizenship if Adwoa denies the allegation.
Currently there are two MPs before court over the allegation of dual citizenship. Ironically both MPs are from the opposition party. In the case of the MP for Assin North, the supreme court has injuncted Hon. James Gyakye Quayson from holding himself out as MP.
