"The natural law is clear. Man was created and given the obligation to procreate. Marriage is the cornerstone and pilar to that noble duty. Our African values protect this natural law and if we are to bend and allow such, we must first be shown that this new western culture will uphold the natural law and continue procreation". Those were the words of Justice Mhalibe as he sat to rule on a gay couple case in Zimbabwe.
The judge ruled that, the new couple be held to house arrest for a period of 12 months. It further ruled that if after the one year house arrest, one of them fails to get pregnant, a death penalty be handed over to them.
The couple have since this unprecedented ruling last week been held to house arrest. But as to whether they will succeed in getting pregnant or not is another issue for discussion after one year.
People around the world particularly Africa and Ghana have been reacting to this monomental ruling of 5th September. Netizen Nkuke Promotions posted a picture of the said couple on his Facebook page and wrote, "Zimbabwe court sentences gay couple to one year house arrest, death penalty if one don't get pregnant" and many people have reacted.
While some offered advise and directions as to how one could get pregnant, others suggested they should be taken through pregnancy test after six months. If they test negative, there would be no need to wait till one year.
Below are some of the reactions
Ghana is sharply divided over a bill to criminalise LGBTQI. The private member's bill sponsored by eight members of parliament called Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill has undergone it's first reading in parliament. The bill when passed into law will ensure that persons who promote homosexuality of any form are arrested and prosecuted.
