There is currently some power play ongoing between the Ghana Legal Council and Parliament. The whole debate started after some 499 law school entrants were denied admission even though they had passed the necessary requirements. The 499 took to the streets to protest and even presented a petition to Parliament over their grievances. Parliament last week resolved and called on the General Legal Council (GLC)to admit the incoming students.
It can be recalled that in an interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM, President Akufo-Addo insisted that there was no space to contain the rejected students. His decision comments apparently sought to finalize the whole brouhaha concerning the issue. However, with Parliament tasking the students to be admitted, many though things will change. This has however sparked a new struggle.
In a sharp rebuttal today, Godfred Dame, the Attorney General has replied that Parliament has no law backing them to tell the GLC what to do. He insisted that the GLC is the only approved authority to regulate admissions. This rebuttal hasn’t gone down with certain people in Parliament. MPs for Madina and South Dayi have for instance filed an application for a private member’s bill to challenge the powers of the GLC.
The 1st Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu has also hit back at the Attorney General for trying to challenge the decision of Parliament. Speaking to Emefa Appaw of Joy News, he noted that he finds it strange that despite the decision of Parliament the GLC still stands on its grounds. He added that the only way to solve the impasses was the summoning of the Attorney General to come answer questions before Parliament. He noted that Godfred will have to explain the rationale behind their rejection of the decision of the House.
The coming days will be interesting as Parliament and the GLC battle it out for whose decision stands supreme. However, even as they slug it out the 499 remain frustrated and it seems the law they seek to uphold in future is fighting against them.
