There has been several arrests of journalists and CSO leaders these days. These victims were arrested for comments they made on social media and on other media platforms the Government found threatening. The journalists include Captain Smart of Media General, Oheneba of Power FM and Kwabena Bobie Ansah of Accra FM. The founder of Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson and Conveynor of #FixTheCountry movement Oliver Barker Vormawor have also found themselves at the wrong side of the law in a spate of two weeks.
Many people have attributed the development to the return of culture of silence. Many are those who have raised concerns over the development.
The host of Joy News' Newsfile show, Lawyer Samson Lardy Anyenini has also reacted to the development. Speaking during his popular weekend political show on Saturday, the journalist of the year called on the security to deal ruthlessly with journalists whom he described as thieves. He added that when such journalists are caught, nobody should question or raise concerns about their rights being abused.
Prior to that statement, he explained to the personnel in charge of the security of Ghana that all journalists are human beings just like anyone else. According to him, it is very important for the police to pick up or arrest any journalist irrespective of their level if they have some suspicions that the conduct is an offense.
Speaking from a law perspective, he believed that the freedom of the press as stated in the constitution does not support or guarantee the reckless and general misconduct of journalists.
Although the lawyer spoke on legal background, a section of the public expressed disappointment in his comments. Many of them said they expected the journalist to speak for his fellow media men. Unfortunately, he chose to do the exact opposite. They believe he only satisfied his political masters.
This is not the first time, Samson Lardi is speaking his mind this way. Earlier, he had called on the Government to listen to the people and withdraw the controversial E Levy. He reminded the president how he caused the VAT to a halt while in opposition. Samson believe a repackaged E Levy in the future may be accepted by Ghanaians.
