Soldiers has arrested illegal miners at Eastern Region, Report.

The operation of a group of illegal miners in Oseikrom, New Abirem District, Eastern Region, has been halted.

The group was halted, according to Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources George Mireku Duker, "because they don't have a mining license." It's on a shady website. Before they begin mining, they must obtain an EPA permit.”

“This concession does not belong to anyone. The Minerals Commission has not given any concessions in this area, according to the Deputy Minister.

Mr. Duker is currently leading a team in the Eastern Region to crack down on illicit miners.

Members of the ministry, the Minerals Commission, and members of the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service make up the team.

Illegal miners, mostly from Burkina Faso, Benin, and the Ivory Coast, have infiltrated the settlements, diverted the Pra River's course, and are mining with mercury.

The miners had set up camp and fled into the bushes when they saw the Minister's team approaching.

At Oseikrom, however, the crew was able to apprehend five of them and burn over 30 changfan machines.

Mr. Duker, who spoke to the media, expressed shock at the level of degradation.

“The invasion of foreigners is now the trend, and it is now a worrying one… Those who have been arrested attest to that fact, and it is very unfortunate that Ghanaians are allowing this to happen,” he said.
