The number of terrorist attacks in the Sahel region of Africa keeps increasing by the day. Such violent extremisms is gradually gaining grounds in West Africa's coastal states, hence making many citizens living in or around such regions to continue living in fear and panic. Ghana, although surrounded by terror hit countries appears at first glance to have been largely spared from terrorist attacks. It's neighbouring countries or immediate neighbours such as the likes of Togo, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Mali have all experienced such attacks. Although Ghana has managed terrorist threats over the years, security experts are warning that the current trend of extremist activities makes Ghana highly susceptible to an attack.
In a statement signed and issued by the Minister of National Security, Hon. Albert Kan-Dapaah, few days ago, one does not need a soothsayer to be told that the terrorists operating within the region have Ghana as a target, and there is a need to take security measures seriously. Although all members of the public especially religious bodies have been tasked to heighten vigilance at all places of mass gatherings, many citizens including some top government officials in the country are still expressing fear and worry about the horrifying situation. The Information Minister, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a recent tweet has expressed worry about the the potential extremist elements targeted at Ghana.
The Honorable wrote: "Very worrying reports of potential attacks of extremist elements targeted at Ghana. As we heighten the alertedness of intelligence and security agencies, all of us need to be more security conscious and be quick to report any suspicious persons or packages to security agencies".
